Portrait Artist Statement (Snowbelle)
Being one of my only pets, my cat named Snowbelle is very important to me in ways that humans never could be. Pets act as a silent but caring friend who always stick with you no matter what. I got my cats when I was in fourth grade so now they’ve been with me for almost half my life and I will miss of all the nights spent with them sleeping in my room when I go off to college. We recently started to let our cats go outside and I noticed that they always liked to roll around and lay down on our deck with the wind blowing creating new smells and views unfamiliar to them. I petted my cat in her favorite spot and waited for her to start rolling around in order to snap the best picture, but she actually ended up licking her paws to clean her body which I thought was an even better picture. Lighting was probably the hardest part because my cat’s fur is extremely reflective so the sunlight was hard to capture properly, and on top of that, my cat kept staying in the shade because it was a hot day out so those pictures didn’t look very good at all. I ended up picking the deck picture because I really liked the lines and geometric shapes created by the planks because I think that made a nice contrast to the organic shape that was my cat along with the fact that the orange in her fur was complemented by the faded red deck paint that now looks orange. This also created a nice contrast as there is a free-flowing body of a living organism being compared to the systematic and rigid pattern of the floor boards which seems to provide a nice and constant structural background to the picture which puts more emphasis on the cat as it is the exception to this regulated background.

Golf Carting in Daylight
Artist Statement #2: The person shown above is my 15 year-old brother named Nick. I have a younger sister as well, but I have always bonded better with my brother since we like similar things and are closer in age. Living in the same house together for 15 years has coerced us to become best friends and something that I don't take for granted. I took a photo of my brother in our golf cart because it is his favorite mode of transportation and represents his love of golf. I tried to take a photo from the same level, to show equivalence, and to take a picture with his face partially in the shade because I thought that I could make it look very dramatic. My main focus in this picture was the lighting: I wanted the shadow to cover half his face because I always thought it was symbolic that people have two sides to them. This became difficult because of the angle and the lack of balance that came with trying to shade half a face. How could I make each half look equally important when one was in the spotlight? I tried to fix this by making his face flatter towards the camera, expressing both sides, to show the equivalency of both sides. Finally, I had some issues with framing because of the randomness and imbalance of the background, but fixed the issue by making it more blurry which also helped to emphasize the focal point of the picture which is the contrast in complexions on my brother's face.
