Nature:
I actually took these pictures after a different set had been rejected for being too far away, but I think it turned out well. I focused more on taking pictures involving close-ups of nature and paying attention to detail. These pictures were some of the only that I used the blur effect for the background because it helped to emphasize the effect of the focus on detail. I enjoyed manipulating the color and hue of these photos because it helped to bring out the descriptive detail hidden within the texture of leaves and thistles and so forth. I thought that these pictures were the most entertaining to take because it required a better eye for photography and it required me to look for distinguishing details that separated the truly beautiful aspects of nature in order to convey that feeling of beauty.

Dead Grass:
I took pictures from an area full of dead grass and trees far away because I thought it was very diverse compared to the other pictures full of life among this portfolio. I focused on the grass details and the thistles details in my editing process because I thought they looked very unique and they provided some sharpness to the repetitive background of the landscape. The large tree in the background helped to give an African plain type of look which made the area look more exotic than being a simple landscape among the Ann Arbor area. I struggled finding interesting details to focus on because I originally wanted to focus on the the tree and grand expanse of grass, but it turned out being better when I focused on the smaller details anyway. I enjoyed taking all the pictures in this composition but this location was my least favorite because I found it troublesome to get better-looking pictures in a more color-dry landscape.

Forest Inside:
I took photos in the forest in my neighborhood because I thought it had a very natural feel to it. There are trees, dirt paths, fallen branches, and vegetation all over the place: it isn’t particularly well-maintained. I had some difficulty when it came to taking pictures that were bright enough without using the flash because the leaves and trees covered most of the sky and the sun wasn’t shining through. I was trying to convey the natural disorganization of things and how it’s not necessarily a bad thing. It provides a place to improve and can be used for a place of silence and tranquility similar to the forest, calmness as the viewer feels like it is okay to not have everything perfectly in control.

Corn:
I took pictures at the corn field because I thought that the pattern of the corn was very interesting. I liked the yellow mixed with the green stalks and grass and thought it looked very fall-ish. I liked how when I edited the photos I could manipulate the color of the corn and make it a more appealing yellow and even orange in some cases (more vibrant). One of my difficulties with taking pictures here was the fact that I wasn’t able to get very high to take a bird’s eye view of the corn field, but I think the straight-on photos seem just as descriptive as the pattern from above. I never usually drive down that way, but I was searching for diverse photo opportunities so when I saw a corn field, I thought it was a new, interesting perspective to add to my digital portfolio which could portray the idea that unity is strength.

Forest:
I took pictures at this location because I really liked the color of the leaves and trees, and I thought that the trees and path lines made a very cool long corridor look for the entire environment. I took some pictures from different angles, but the straight view looked best because it truly showed the depth of the trail. While I was editing, I was trying to convey a feeling of structure as it looked like the trail was natural but perfectly formatted and organized. It was a little difficult to get good pictures of depth when using an iPhone camera but I think that I properly sidestepped that problem with my editing in PhotoShop. I’ve seen this forest trail many times as I drove by throughout the years, but I never ventured into the forest itself so it was a very interesting and satisfying experience.
