Artist Statement: I chose to talk about the lacrosse balls I used for my still life for my artist statement. The lacrosse balls are important to me because they show my love of lacrosse, and my dedication to practice because I used these balls many, many times to play catch and hone in my skills over the years. I set up the picture by taking different colors of lacrosse balls and setting them up on a railing on my deck because I liked the contrast between the spherical shape of the ball and the linear, structural look of the lines zagging across railing made by the planks. I chose an angle that gave the balls visible shadows in a few of the pictures because it presented a sense of symmetry that emphasized the pattern of the balls in their various organizations in the picture. No matter what color and how far onto the deck, the balls had the same size shadows, and that seemed very interesting to me, and I decided to take pictures of the design it created. I tried various designs like zig-zagging and a straight line, but I have to say that the zig-zags came out better because the viewer can see all the balls at the same time while also getting the sense of the pattern.
