CVS Wide Front |
Old School Gas Station |
Brick Layout |
CVS Artist Statement: I took pictures at the CVS at the corner of my street because I liked the way it looked like an old school gas station or convenience store. Most stores try to look new and advanced but CVS sticks with the common theme or hard brick and yellow wall above it with giant red letters that are fun to captivate in picture. My main difficulty with this location like a few others was how to capture the unique lines of the bricks without creating too much light or darkness that the lines were no longer visible. It was hard to make this show up in the blueprint, but I think that the trick is to mess with the contrast and then the brightness (or lack thereof). I was trying to convey a message that, like CVS, it's okay to stick with old school things because "if it ain't broken, don't fix it."

SuperMarket |
Meijer Artist Statement: I took pictures at Meijer because I really liked the design of all the different parts of the store as they connected. I thought that it looked like its own little community with different buildings which is also the message I was trying to convey: supermarkets are like small cities. You meet people there, go there together, its essentially public property, open 24/7, and on top of all that, it is also the town square as a trading center like in the olden times. I had some difficulty editing these pictures as they were some of the few pictures that I've taken that didn't require too much editing. I ended up changing a little bit of lighting but for the most part, everything looked good already including the way the sun subtly entered the picture making it look like one of those places where they cheesily put the glare in the corner but this one was authentic.
Layout of Bricks |
Mosaic Brickwork |
Great Blue Wall |
Wall Artist Statement: I took pictures of this wall because I wanted to show the diversity of having close-up shots to compete with all of these far-away full-building shots. I really enjoyed manipulating the colors of the brick because it think it showed the different sides of what something can be. This is part of what I was trying to convey: the same thing can look completely different in two different lights. I liked the blue bricks and how they looked almost older and more broken compared to the red/brown brick that is so commonly seen in public. I had some difficulty making the bricks not too outstandingly bright as well as in some of the other pictures, but I figured it out by lowering the contrast and raising the brightness.

Fading Light |
Maroon Brick |
Jimmy John's Artist Statement: I took photos at Jimmy John's because I work there and I enjoy working there so it means a lot to me. I wanted to create a blueprint of my workplace because I thought it was symbolic of how I structure my schedule by showing the actual structure of the building - perhaps it's more ironic than symbolic. I wanted to show people that the food industry is completely planned out and that the industry is actually very manipulative by making us think that we have a choice or are getting a better deal than we really are, and all they have to do is create a basic blueprint. I had some issues getting the colors of the bricks to not become obnoxiously bright or dark, but I think I figured it out in the end by modifying the lighting after giving it the fine edges. I'm proud of how the cool the design looks (especially the sign) because it looks like any other building from this view but it means someone to me even if it's almost unrecognizable in this setting.

Bank Blueprint Plans |
Bright Brick |
Chase Artist Statement: I chose to take some photos at my local Chase bank because I liked the layout and curvature of the building. I wanted to make blueprints of a bank because I feel as though banks are usually differently structured, and its architecture would give a diversity to the group. I tried to convey a feeling of security with uncertainty in this picture as I took a picture of a popular and secure bank, Chase, but there was a large shadow lurking into the picture that no one sees at first. I had some difficulty trying to edit out the shadow from the picture but by the end, I realized that it actually helped the theme when it was in the picture so I decided to keep it because it would add that intriguing element of uncertainty. I like the curvature of the front of the building and I think it looks unique in the blueprints since most of formed solely with lines.
